Evaṃ lakkhaṇassa panassa –
Dussīlyaviddhaṃsanatā , anavajjaguṇo tathā;
Kiccasampattiatthena, raso nāma pavuccati.
(味)摧毁诸恶戒,具足诸善德,
作用成就义,是即名为味。
Ñ(I,21): While such is its characteristic:
Its function has a double sense:
Action to stop misconduct, then
Achievement as the quality
Of blamelessness in virtuous men.
Tasmā idaṃ sīlaṃ nāma kiccaṭṭhena rasena dussīlyaviddhaṃsanarasaṃ, sampattiatthena rasena anavajjarasanti veditabbaṃ. Lakkhaṇādīsu hi kiccameva sampatti vā rasoti vuccati.
此戒能摧毁诸恶戒,是以作用之义为味;其次具诸无罪之德,是以成就之义为味。然在相等之义的味,只可说作用(kicca)或成就(sampatti)为味(rasa)(不是食味等的味)。
Ñ: So what is called virtue should be understood to have the function (nature) of stopping misconduct as its function (nature) in the sense of action, and a blameless function (nature) as its function (nature) in the sense of achievement. For under [these headings of] characteristic, etc., it is action (kicca) or it is achievement (sampatti) that is called 'function' (rasa—nature).
