Visuddhimagga XVII-2

 Tattha avijjādayo tāva dhammā paṭiccasamuppādoti veditabbā.

此中当先知道无明等法是「缘起」。

Ñ(XVII,2): Herein, firstly, it is the states beginning with ignorance that should be understood as dependent origination.

Sayādaw: tāva = firstly.

Paṭiccasamuppāda only cause; Jarā-maraṇa are not included, because they are effect.



Vuttañhetaṃ bhagavatā –

即如世尊说:

Ñ: For this is said by the Blessed One:



‘‘Katamo ca, bhikkhave, paṭiccasamuppādo?

「诸比丘,什么是缘起?

Ñ: 'And what is the dependent origination, bhikkhus?

Sayādaw: Paccaya = dependent originating cause.



Avijjāpaccayā, bhikkhave, saṅkhārā, saṅkhārapaccayā viññāṇaṃ, viññāṇapaccayā nāmarūpaṃ, nāmarūpapaccayā saḷāyatanaṃ, saḷāyatanapaccayā phasso, phassapaccayā vedanā, vedanāpaccayā taṇhā, taṇhāpaccayā upādānaṃ, upādānapaccayā bhavo, bhavapaccayā jāti, jātipaccayā jarāmaraṇaṃ sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā sambhavanti. Evametassa kevalassa dukkhakkhandhassa samudayo hoti.

无明缘行、行缘识、识缘名色、名色缘六处、六处缘触、触缘受、受缘爱、爱缘取、取缘有、有缘生、由生之缘而发生老、死、愁、悲、苦、忧、恼,如是这是一切苦蕴的集(生起)。

Ñ: With ignorance as condition there are [volitional] formations; with formations as condition, consciousness; with consciousness as condition, mentality-materiality; with mentality-materiality as condition, the sixfold base; with the sixfold base as condition, contact; with contact as condition, feeling; with feeling as condition, craving; with craving as condition, clinging; with clinging as condition, becoming; with becoming as condition, birth; with birth as condition there is ageing-and-death, and sorrow, lamentation, pain, grief, and despair; thus there is the arising of this whole mass of suffering.

Sayādaw: jarāmaraṇaṃ are universal; sokaparidevadukkhadomanassupāyāsā are not universal.

Samudayo means not created by God.



Ayaṃ vuccati, bhikkhave, paṭiccasamuppādo’’ti (saṃ. ni. 2.1).

诸比丘,是名缘起」。

Ñ: This is called the dependent origination, bhikkhus' (S.ii,1).
