Visuddhimagga IV-47

Visesato panettha saddhāpaññānaṃ samādhivīriyānañca samataṃ pasaṃsanti.

这里特别的要赞叹信与慧及定与精进的平等。

Ñ(IV,47): However, what is particularly recommended is balancing faith with understanding, and concentration with energy.



Balavasaddho hi mandapañño muddhappasanno hoti, avatthusmiṃ pasīdati.

假使只有信强而慧弱,则成为迷信,而信于不当信之事;

Ñ: For one strong in faith and weak in understanding has confidence uncritically and groundlessly.



Balavapañño mandasaddho kerāṭikapakkhaṃ bhajati, bhesajjasamuṭṭhito viya rogo atekiccho hoti.

若慧强而信弱,则未免倾向于奸邪,犹如从毒药而引生的难治的病相似;

Ñ: One strong in understanding and weak in faith errs on the side of cunning and is as hard to cure as one sick of a disease caused by medicine.



Ubhinnaṃ samatāya vatthusmiṃyeva pasīdati.

以两者均等,才能信其当信之事。

Ñ: With the balancing of the two a man has confidence only when there are grounds for it.



Balavasamādhiṃ pana mandavīriyaṃ samādhissa kosajjapakkhattā kosajjaṃ abhibhavati.

若定强而精进弱,则倾向于定的怠惰,而怠惰增长;[PTS 130]

Ñ: Then idleness overpowers one strong in concentration and weak in energy, since concentration favours idleness. [130]



Balavavīriyaṃ mandasamādhiṃ vīriyassa uddhaccapakkhattā uddhaccaṃ abhibhavati.

若精进强而定弱,则倾向于精进的掉举,故掉举增长。

Ñ: Agitation overpowers one strong in energy and weak in concentration, since energy favours agitation.



Samādhi pana vīriyena saṃyojito kosajje patituṃ na labhati.

唯有定与精进相应,才不得陷于怠惰;

Ñ: But concentration coupled with energy cannot lapse into idleness,



Vīriyaṃ samādhinā saṃyojitaṃ uddhacce patituṃ na labhati, tasmā tadubhayaṃ samaṃ kātabbaṃ.

精进与定相应,才不得陷于掉举。所以应使两者均等;

Ñ: and energy coupled with concentration cannot lapse into agitation. So these two should be balanced;



Ubhayasamatāya hi appanā hoti.

以两者的均等可得安止定。

Ñ: for absorption comes with the balancing of the two.
