Visuddhimagga XVI-53

Ettha ca mandagginā antobhājane pāko viya soko. Tikkhagginā paccamānassa bhājanato bahinikkhamanaṃ viya paridevo. Bahinikkhantāvasesassa nikkhamituṃ appahontassa antobhājaneyeva yāva parikkhayā pāko viya upāyāso daṭṭhabbo.

在此(愁悲恼之)中,「愁」是如以弱火而烧釜中的东西。「悲」是如以烈火而烧的东西满出镬的外面来。「恼」则犹如不能外出留在釜内而被烧干了的东西相似。

Ñ(XVI,53): Sorrow is like the cooking [of oil, etc.] in a pot over a slow fire. Lamentation is like its boiling over from the pot when cooking over a quick fire. Despair is like what remains in the pot after it has boiled over and is unable to do so any more, going on cooking in the pot till it dries up.
