Visuddhimagga XVII-8

 Lakkhaṇaṃ panettha saddasatthato pariyesitabbaṃ.

而此(缘起的语)相则应于文法中求之。

Ñ(XVII,8): The characteristic must be sought from grammar.

574. Keci pana paṭicca sammā ca titthiyaparikappitapakatipurisādikāraṇanirapekkho uppādo paṭiccasamuppādoti evaṃ uppādamattaṃ paṭiccasamuppādoti vadanti, taṃ na yujjati.

有人不顾外道(数论)所遍计的自性、神我等的原因,却说缘正生起为缘起,如是只以生起为缘起。[PTS 519] 他这种说法是不恰当的!

Ñ: Some, in fact, [say that the expression paṭicca samuppāda (dependent origination) is characterized thus:] 'having depended (paṭicca), a right (sammā) arising (uppāda), [depending on causes rightly by] disregarding such causes conjectured by sectarians as the Primordial Essence (Prakriti), World Soul (Purusha), and so on'. So what they call dependent origination (paṭicca samuppāda) is a simple arising (uppāda) [for they equate the prefix saṃ only with sammā (rightly) and ignore saṃ (with, con-)]. That is untenable. [519]

Chew: What is “Primordial Essence (Prakriti) '所遍计的自性'”?

Kasmā?

何以故?

Ñ: Why?

Suttābhāvato, suttavirodhato, gambhīranayāsambhavato, saddabhedato ca.

1)无有经说故,(2)与经相违故,(3)缺乏甚深之理故,(4)破坏语法故。

Ñ: (1) There is no such sutta; (2) it contradicts suttas; (3) it admits of no profound treatment; and (4) it is ungrammatical.
