Catubbidhā hi suddhi desanāsuddhi, saṃvarasuddhi, pariyeṭṭhisuddhi, paccavekkhaṇasuddhīti.
Ñ(I,126): Purification is of four kinds: purification by the Teaching, purification by restraint, purification by search, and purification by reviewing.
-
Sayādaw U Sīlānanda: [
the Teaching=> purification by Confession (desanāsuddhi)].
Tattha desanāsuddhi nāma pātimokkhasaṃvarasīlaṃ. Tañhi desanāya sujjhanato desanāsuddhīti vuccati.
Ñ: Herein, virtue of the Pātimokkha restraint is called 'purification by the Teaching'; [44] for that is so called because it purifies by means of teaching.

Sayādaw U Sīlānanda: [
the Teaching=> purification by Confession (desanāsuddhi)].
Han: I had written before to you at DSG forum that purification by Confession is correct.
Now, when I think about it I am not so sure.
Why?
The Pāḷi text says:
“Tattha desanāsuddhi nāma pātimokkhasaṃvarasīlaṃ”.
which means:
“desanāsuddhi” is “pātimokkhasaṃvarasīlaṃ”.
desanā: [f.] discourse, sermon, preaching.
pātimokkhasaṃvarasīlaṃ” means restraint by pātimokkha.
And what is pātimokkha? It is the “Disciplinary Code” for the monks. When the monks learn pātimokkha, it is listening to the Teaching or “desanā”. So it is not too far wrong to interpret it as the “Teaching”. At the same time, the most common and frequent penalty for Pātimokkha offense (or purification of the offense done) is Confession. Thus, both the Teaching and Confession are possible..
Therefore, it is quite a tricky business.
I think you should keep it pending until you meet with any Sayādaw to get his opinion.
Saṃvarasuddhi nāma indriyasaṃvarasīlaṃ. Tañhi ‘‘na puna evaṃ karissāmī’’ti cittādhiṭṭhānasaṃvareneva sujjhanato saṃvarasuddhīti vuccati.
Ñ: Virtue of restraint of faculties is called 'purification by restraint'; for that is so called because it purifies by means of the restraint in the mental resolution 'I shall not do so again'.
Pariyeṭṭhisuddhi nāma ājīvapārisuddhisīlaṃ. Tañhi anesanaṃ pahāya dhammena samena paccaye uppādentassa pariyesanāya suddhattā pariyeṭṭhisuddhīti vuccati.
Ñ: Virtue of livelihood purification is called 'purification by search'; for that is so called because search is purified in one who abandons wrong search and gets requisites lawfully and properly.
Paccavekkhaṇasuddhi nāma paccayasannissitasīlaṃ. Tañhi vuttappakārena paccavekkhaṇena sujjhanato paccavekkhaṇasuddhīti vuccati.
Ñ: Virtue dependent on requisites is called 'purification by reviewing'; for that is so called because it purifies by the reviewing of the kind already described.
Tena vuttaṃ ‘‘paṭiggahaṇe pana satiṃ akatvā paribhoge karontassa anāpattī’’ti.
Ñ: Hence it was said above (§125): 'There is no offence for one who is mindful in using after accepting without mindfulness'.
