‘‘Seyyathāpi, bhikkhave, suvaṇṇakāro vā suvaṇṇakārantevāsī vā ukkaṃ bandhati, ukkaṃ bandhitvā ukkāmukhaṃ ālimpeti, ukkāmukhaṃ ālimpetvā saṇḍāsena jātarūpaṃ gahetvā ukkāmukhe pakkhipitvā kālenakālaṃ abhidhamati,
「诸比丘!亦如金匠或金匠的弟子造炉,既造炉已,于炉口点火,既于炉口点火已,以火钳挟金投入炉口,时时吹风,
Ñ(VIII,75): 'Bhikkhus, just as a skilled goldsmith or goldsmith's apprentice prepares his furnace and heats it up and puts crude gold into it with tongs; and he blows on it from time to time,
kālenakālaṃ udakena paripphoseti,
时时洒水,
Ñ: sprinkles water on it from time to time,
kālenakālaṃ ajjhupekkhati.
时时放舍。
Ñ: and looks on at it from time to time;
Sace, bhikkhave, suvaṇṇakāro vā suvaṇṇakārantevāsī vā taṃ jātarūpaṃ ekantaṃ abhidhameyya,
诸比丘!如果金匠或金匠的弟子专一对金吹风,
Ñ: and if the goldsmith or goldsmith's apprentice only blew on the crude gold,
ṭhānaṃ taṃ jātarūpaṃ ḍaheyya.
则金将烧掉;
Ñ: it would burn
Sace, bhikkhave, suvaṇṇakāro vā suvaṇṇakārantevāsī vā taṃ jātarūpaṃ ekantaṃ udakena paripphoseyya,
诸比丘!如果金匠或金匠的弟子专一对金洒水,
Ñ: and if he only sprinkled water on it,
ṭhānaṃ taṃ jātarūpaṃ nibbāyeyya.
则金将冷却;
Ñ: it would cool down,
Sace, bhikkhave, suvaṇṇakāro vā suvaṇṇakārantevāsī vā taṃ jātarūpaṃ ekantaṃ ajjhupekkheyya,
诸比丘!如果金匠或金匠的弟子专一对金放舍,
Ñ: and if he only looked on at it,
ṭhānaṃ taṃ jātarūpaṃ na sammā paripākaṃ gaccheyya.
则金不至正当的纯熟。
Ñ: it would not get rightly refined;
Yato ca kho, bhikkhave, suvaṇṇakāro vā suvaṇṇakārantevāsī vā taṃ jātarūpaṃ kālenakālaṃ abhidhamati,
诸比丘!然而金匠或金匠的弟子,对金时时吹风,
Ñ: but when the goldsmith or goldsmith's apprentice blows on the crude gold from time to time,
kālenakālaṃ udakena paripphoseti,
时时洒水,
Ñ: sprinkles water on it from time to time,
kālenakālaṃ ajjhupekkhati,
时时放舍,
Ñ: and looks on at it from time to time,
taṃ hoti jātarūpaṃ muduñca kammaññañca pabhassarañca, na ca pabhaṅgu, sammā upeti kammāya.
则金成为柔软,适合作业,净洁及不会破坏而成正当的作用──
Ñ: then it becomes malleable, wieldy and bright, it is not brittle, and it submits rightly to being wrought;
Yassā yassā ca piḷandhanavikatiyā ākaṅkhati yadi paṭikāya yadi kuṇḍalāya yadi gīveyyāya yadi suvaṇṇamālāya, tañcassa atthaṃ anubhoti.
如欲用金制作金带、耳环、颈饰、金鬘等的种种装饰品,都得完成他的目的」。
Ñ: whatever kind of ornament he wants to work it into, whether a chain or a ring or a necklace or a gold fillet, it serves his purpose.
