Dukkhāpanayanākārappavattilakkhaṇā karuṇā,
「悲」以拔除有情之苦的行相为相,
Ñ(IX,94): Compassion is characterized as promoting the aspect of allaying suffering.
paradukkhāsahanarasā,
不堪忍他人之苦为味,
Ñ: Its function resides in not bearing others' suffering.
avihiṃsāpaccupaṭṭhānā,
不害为现起,
Ñ: It is manifested as non-cruelty.
dukkhābhibhūtānaṃ anāthabhāvadassanapadaṭṭhānā.
见为苦所迫者的无所依怙为足处,
Ñ: Its proximate cause is to see helplessness in those overwhelmed by suffering.
Vihiṃsūpasamo tassā sampatti, sokasambhavo vipatti.
害的止息为(悲的)成就,生忧则为(悲者)失败。
Ñ: It succeeds when it makes cruelty subside and it fails when it produces sorrow.
