Visuddhimagga XXI-38

753. Tattha uppādoti purimakammapaccayā idha uppatti. Pavattanti tathā uppannassa pavatti. Nimittanti sabbampi saṅkhāranimittaṃ. Āyūhanāti āyatiṃ paṭisandhihetubhūtaṃ kammaṃ. Paṭisandhīti āyatiṃ uppatti. Gatīti yāya gatiyā sā paṭisandhi hoti. Nibbattīti khandhānaṃ nibbattanaṃ. Upapattīti ‘‘samāpannassa vā upapannassa vā’’ti (dha. sa. 1289, 1291) evaṃ vuttā vipākappavatti. Jātīti jarādīnaṃ paccayabhūtā bhavapaccayā jāti. Jarāmaraṇādayo pākaṭā eva.

此中:「生起」──是以过去的业为缘而于此世生起。「转起」──即已如是生起的转起。「相」──即一切行的相。「造作」──是为未来结生之因的业。「结生」──是未来的生起。「趣」──是彼结生所趣之处。「发生」──是诸蕴的发生。「起」──是[《无碍解道》Pts.I,p.84;《法聚论》Dhs.p.224;《分别论》Vibh.p.421.]「入定者或生起者」这样所说的异熟的转起。「生」──是为老死之缘及以有为缘的生。「老死」等之义则易明了。

Ñ(XXI,38): Herein, arising is appearance here [in this becoming] with previous kamma as condition. Occurrence is the occurrence of what has arisen in this way. The sign is the sign of all formations. Accumulation is the kamma that is the cause of future rebirth-linking. Rebirth-linking is future appearance. Destiny is the destiny in which the rebirth-linking takes place. Generation is the generating of aggregates. Re-arising is the occurrence of kamma-result stated thus, 'In one who has attained [to it] or in one who has been reborn [in it]' (Dhs. §1282). Birth is birth with becoming as its condition, itself a condition for ageing and so on. Ageing, sickness, death, etc., are obvious.
