Visuddhimagga I-20

8. Idāni kānassa lakkhaṇarasapaccupaṭṭhānapadaṭṭhānānīti ettha –

三、什么是戒的相、味、现起、足处

Ñ(I,20): (iii) NOW WHAT ARE ITS CHARACTERISTIC, FUNCTION, MANIFESTATION, AND PROXIMATE CAUSE? Here:

Sīlanaṃ lakkhaṇaṃ tassa, bhinnassāpi anekadhā;

Sanidassanattaṃ rūpassa, yathā bhinnassanekadhā.

(相)戒虽有多种,唯戒行为相。

犹如种种色,可见性为相。

Ñ: The characteristic of it is composing

Even when analysed in various ways,

As visibility is of visible data

Even when analysed in various ways.

Yathā hi nīlapītādibhedena anekadhā bhinnassāpi rūpāyatanassa sanidassanattaṃ lakkhaṇaṃ, nīlādibhedena bhinnassāpi sanidassana bhāvānatikkamanato.

譬如青黄等色,虽有种种的区别,而色处的特相总不出于可见性。

Ñ: Just as visibleness is the characteristic of the visible-data base even when analysed into the various categories of blue, yellow, etc., because even when analysed into these categories it does not exceed visibleness,

Sayādaw U Sīlānanda: [visible-data = visible object / form].

Han: Mahāsī Sayādaw’s translation is same as that of Sayādaw U Sīlānanda.

Tathā sīlassa cetanādibhedena anekadhā bhinnassāpi yadetaṃ kāyakammādīnaṃ samādhānavasena kusalānañca dhammānaṃ patiṭṭhānavasena vuttaṃ sīlanaṃ, tadeva lakkhaṇaṃ, cetanādibhedena bhinnassāpi samādhānapatiṭṭhānabhāvānatikkamanato.

同样的,戒虽有思等的种种区别,总不出于以正持身业等及保持善法的戒行为相,所以说戒之相为戒行。

Ñ: so also this same composing, described above as the coordinating of bodily action, etc., and as the foundation of profitable states, is the characteristic of virtue even when analysed into the various categories of volition, etc., because even when analysed into these categories it does not exceed the state of coordination and foundation.
