Visuddhimagga I-30

Pañcamaduke kālaparicchedaṃ katvā samādinnaṃ sīlaṃ kālapariyantaṃ. Yāvajīvaṃ samādiyitvā tatheva pavattitaṃ āpāṇakoṭikanti evaṃ kālapariyantaāpāṇakoṭikavasena duvidhaṃ.

（5）（时限、终身）于第五种二法中，限定一段时间受持的为「时限（戒）」；尽其生命受持的为「终身（戒）」。这是时限、终身二种。

Ñ(I,30): 6. In the fifth dyad temporary virtue is that undertaken after deciding on a time limit. Lifelong virtue is that practised in the same way but undertaking it for as long as life lasts. So it is of two kinds as temporary and lifelong.
