Visuddhimagga IX-95

Pamodanalakkhaṇā muditā,

「喜」──以喜悦为相,

Ñ(IX,95): Gladness is characterized as gladdening (produced by others' success).



anissāyanarasā,

无嫉为味,

Ñ: Its function resides in being unenvious.



arativighātapaccupaṭṭhānā,

不乐的破坏为现起,

Ñ: It is manifested as the elimination of aversion (boredom).



sattānaṃ sampattidassanapadaṭṭhānā.

见有情的成功为足处,

Ñ: Its proximate cause is seeing beings' success.



Arativūpasamo tassā sampatti, pahāsasambhavo vipatti.

不乐的止息是它的成就,发生(世俗的)笑则为它的失败。

Ñ: It succeeds when it makes aversion (boredom) subside, and it fails when it produces merriment.
