Visuddhimagga XXI-120

802. Apica maggo nāma pañcahi kāraṇehi nāmaṃ labhati sarasena vā paccanīkena vā saguṇena vā ārammaṇena vā āgamanena vā.

此道亦由五种理由而得名:即(一)以自性,(二)以反对者,(三)以自德,(四)以所缘,(五)以来由。

Ñ(XXI,120): Furthermore, the path gets its names for five reasons, that is to say, (1) owing to its own nature, or (2) owing to what it opposes, or (3) owing to its own special quality, or (4) owing to its object, or (5) owing to the way of arrival.
