Bhayatupaṭṭhānañāṇakathā

(三)怖畏现起智

Ñ: [3. KNOWLEDGE OF APPEARANCE AS TERROR]



750. Tassevaṃ sabbasaṅkhārānaṃ khayavayabhedanirodhārammaṇaṃ bhaṅgānupassanaṃ āsevantassa bhāventassa bahulīkarontassa sabbabhavayonigatiṭhitisattāvāsesu pabhedakā saṅkhārā sukhena jīvitukāmassa bhīrukapurisassa sīhabyagghadīpiacchataracchayakkharakkhasacaṇḍagoṇacaṇḍakukkurapabhinnamadacaṇḍahatthighoraāsīvisaasanivicakkasusānaraṇabhūmijalitaaṅgārakāsuādayo viya mahābhayaṃ hutvā upaṭṭhahanti. Tassa ‘‘atītā saṅkhārā niruddhā, paccuppannā nirujjhanti, anāgate nibbattanakasaṅkhārāpi evameva nirujjhissantī’’ti passato etasmiṃ ṭhāne bhayatupaṭṭhānañāṇaṃ nāma uppajjati.

如是修习多作以一切诸行的灭尽,衰灭,破坏及灭为所缘的坏随观的瑜伽者,于一切的有、生、趣、(识)住、有情居的在破坏的诸行,起大怖畏,正如胆怯而欲求快乐生活的人,对于狮子,虎,豹,熊,鬣狗,夜叉,罗剎,恶牛,恶犬,流液时期的恶象,可怕的毒蛇,雷电,战场,坟墓,燃烧的火坑等(起大怖畏)。如是他观「过去的诸行已灭,现在的(诸行)正灭。于未来生起的诸行亦将如是而灭」,即于此处生起「怖畏现起智」。

Ñ(XXI,29): As he repeats, develops and cultivates in this way the contemplation of dissolution, the object of which is cessation consisting in the destruction, fall and breakup of all formations, then formations classed according to all kinds of becoming, generation, destiny, station, or abode of beings, appear to him in the form of a great terror, as lions, tigers, leopards, bears, hyaenas, spirits, ogres, fierce bulls, savage dogs, rutmaddened wild elephants, hideous venomous serpents, thunderbolts, charnel grounds, battlefields, flaming coal pits, etc., appear to a timid man who wants to live in peace. When he sees how past formations have ceased, present ones are ceasing, and those to be generated in the future will cease in just the same way, then what is called knowledge of appearance as terror arises in him at that stage.
