Visuddhimagga XXII-61

Malāti telañjanakalalaṃ viya sayañca asuddhattā, aññesañca asuddhabhāvakaraṇato lobhadosamohā tayo.

「垢」──有贪、瞋、痴的三种,因为它们自己不净,亦使别的不净,如泥为油膏所涂相似。

Ñ(XXII,61): The stains are the three, namely, greed, hate, and delusion. They are so called because they are themselves dirty like oil, black, and mud, and because they dirty other things.
