Visuddhimagga IV-88

71. Ettāvatā ca paṭhamassa jhānassa pahānaṅgaṃ dassetvā idāni sampayogaṅgaṃ dassetuṃ savitakkaṃ savicārantiādi vuttaṃ.

(初禅的相应支)上面已示初禅的舍断支,现在再示初禅的相应支,即说那里的「有寻有伺」等。[PTS 142]

Ñ(IV,88): So far the factors abandoned by the jhāna have been shown. And now, in order to show the factors associated with it, which is accompanied by applied and sustained thought is said. [142]

Sayādaw U Sīlānanda: 'the jhāna' means the first jhāna; [applied and sustained thought => applied and sustained thought etc].



Tattha vitakkanaṃ vitakko, ūhananti vuttaṃ hoti.

(寻)寻是寻求,即思考的意思。

Ñ: Herein, applied thinking (vitakkana) is applied thought (vitakka); hitting upon, is what is meant.

Note in Chinese translation: 「寻」(vitakka),《解脱道论》为「觉」。其定义说:「云何为觉?谓种种觉、思惟、安、思想、心不觉知入正思惟此谓为觉。……问:觉者何想,何味,何起,何处?答:觉者,修猗想为味,下心作念为起,想为行处」。



Svāyaṃ ārammaṇe cittassa abhiniropanalakkhaṇo, āhananapariyāhananaraso.

以专注其心于所缘为相。令心接触、击触于所缘为味(作用);

Ñ: It has the characteristic of directing the mind on to an object (mounting the mind on its object). Its function is to strike at and thresh —



Tathā hi tena yogāvacaro ārammaṇaṃ vitakkāhataṃ vitakkapariyāhataṃ karotīti vuccati.

盖指瑜伽行者以寻接触,以寻击触于所缘而言。

Ñ: for the meditator is said, in virtue of it, to have the object struck at by applied thought, threshed by applied thought.



Ārammaṇe cittassa ānayanapaccupaṭṭhāno.

引导其心于所缘为现起(现状)。

Ñ: It is manifested as the leading of the mind onto an object.



Vicaraṇaṃ vicāro, anusañcaraṇanti vuttaṃ hoti.

(伺)伺是伺察,即深深考察的意思。

Ñ: Sustained thinking (vicaraṇa) is sustained thought (vicāra); continued sustainment (anusañcaraṇa), is what is meant.

Note in Chinese translation: 「伺」(vicara),《解脱道论》为「观」。其定义说:「云为何观?于修观时,随观所择,心住随舍,是谓为观。……问:观者何相,何味,何起,何处?答:观者随择是相,令心猗是味,随见觉是处」。



Svāyaṃ ārammaṇānumajjanalakkhaṇo,

以数数思维于所缘为相。

Ñ: It has the characteristic of continued pressure on (occupation with) the object.



tattha sahajātānuyojanaraso,

与俱生法随行于所缘为味。

Ñ: Its function is to keep conascent [mental] states [occupied] with that.



cittassa anuppabandhanapaccupaṭṭhāno.

令心继续(于所缘)为现起。

Ñ: It is manifested as keeping consciousness anchored [on that object].
