Visuddhimagga IX-9

Evaṃ sante yaṃ vibhaṅge (vibha. 643) vuttaṃ –

Ñ(IX,9): If that is so, does it not conflict with what is said in the texts? For there is no mention of any development of it towards oneself in what is said in the Vibhaṅga:

‘‘Kathañca bhikkhu mettāsahagatena cetasā ekaṃ disaṃ pharitvā viharati?

Ñ: 'And how does a bhikkhu dwell pervading one direction with his heart filled with lovingkindness?

Seyyathāpi nāma ekaṃ puggalaṃ piyaṃ manāpaṃ disvā mettāyeyya,

Ñ: Just as he would feel lovingkindness on seeing a dearly loved person,

evameva sabbe satte mettāya pharatī’’ti.

Ñ: so he pervades all beings with lovingkindness' (Vbh. 272);

‘‘Yañca paṭisambhidāyaṃ (paṭi. ma. 2.22) –

Ñ: and in what is said in the Paṭisambhidā:

‘‘Katamehi pañcahākārehi anodhisopharaṇā mettā cetovimutti bhāvetabbā,

Ñ: 'In what five ways is the mind-deliverance of lovingkindness [practised] with unspecified pervasion?

sabbe sattā averā hontu’’ abyāpajjā anīghā sukhī attānaṃ pariharantu. Sabbe pāṇā… sabbe bhūtā… sabbe puggalā… sabbe attabhāvapariyāpannā averā abyāpajjā anīghā sukhī attānaṃ pariharantū’’tiādi –

即使一切有情保持自己无怨、无害、无恼、有乐,使一切生物,一切生类,[PTS 297] 一切人,一切动物保持自己无怨、无害、无恼、有乐」等;

Ñ: May all beings be free from enmity, affliction and anxiety and live happily. May all breathing things [297] … all who are born … all persons … all those who have a personality be free from enmity, affliction and anxiety and live happily' (Ps.ii,130);

Vuttaṃ. Yañca mettasutte (khu. pā. 9.3; su. ni. 145) –

Ñ: and in what is said in the Mettā Sutta:

‘‘Sukhinova khemino hontu,

Sabbasattā bhavantu sukhitattā’’tiādi. –

Ñ: 'In joy and safety may all beings be joyful at heart' (Sn. 145).

Vuttaṃ, taṃ virujjhati. Na hi tattha attani bhāvanā vuttāti ce.

Ñ: [Does it not conflict with those texts?]

Notes: the English translation is above 'does it not conflict with what is said in the texts? For there is no mention of any development of it towards oneself'.
