Visuddhimagga IV-49

Sati pana sabbattha balavatī vaṭṭati.

唯念力强,对于一切都可以。

Ñ(IV,49): Strong mindfulness, however, is needed in all instances;



Sati hi cittaṃ uddhaccapakkhikānaṃ saddhāvīriyapaññānaṃ vasena uddhaccapātato kosajjapakkhena ca samādhinā kosajjapātato rakkhati,

因为以念可以保护由于信、精进、慧的倾向于掉举而陷于掉举及由于定的倾向于怠惰而陷于怠惰的心。

Ñ: for mindfulness protects the mind from lapsing into agitation through faith, energy and understanding, which favour agitation, and from lapsing into idleness through concentration, which favours idleness.



tasmā sā loṇadhūpanaṃ viya sabbabyañjanesu, sabbakammikaamacco viya ca sabbarājakiccesu sabbattha icchitabbā.

所以念是好像合于一切菜味的盐和香料相似;亦如综理一切事物的大臣处理一切政务相似,可以希求一切的。

Ñ: So it is as desirable in all instances as a seasoning of salt in all sauces, as a prime minister in all the king's business.



Tenāha – ‘‘sati ca pana sabbatthikā vuttā bhagavatā. Kiṃ kāraṇā?

故义疏说:「世尊说,念能应用于一切处,何以故?

Ñ: Hence it is said [in the commentaries (?)]: 'And mindfulness has been called universal by the Blessed One. For what reason?



Cittañhi satipaṭisaraṇaṃ, ārakkhapaccupaṭṭhānā ca sati, na vinā satiyā cittassa paggahaniggaho hotī’’ti.

心常以念为依止,以念守护其现状,以及无念则不能策励抑制于心。」

Ñ: Because the mind has mindfulness as its refuge, and mindfulness is manifested as protection, and there is no exertion and restraint of the mind without mindfulness'.

Bhikkhu Jotinanda: Actually the translation "universal" for the Pāḷi sabbatthikā is not so good. "Universal" denotes it is found everywhere. This would include even in unwholesome citta! It is better to translate sabbatthikā as "desirable in all instances." The Buddha said that mindfulness is desirable in all instances in Aggi-Sutta, SN. v.115.


In "Because the mind has mindfulness as its refuge", the mind (citta) here, according to Mahā-Ṭīkā, means wholesome-mind (kusala-citta). It explains: "For mindfulness is the refuge, the support for that [wholesome-mind] for reaching what is yet to be reached, for attaining what is yet to be attained."
