Catudhātuvavatthānabhāvanā

(二)四界差别的修习

Notes in Chinese translation: 四界差别(Catu dhātuvavatthāna),vavatthāna应译为「安立」「评定」等,但古译常用「界差别观」等语,故这里译为「差别」。《解脱道论》「观四大」。



306. Idāni āhāre paṭikkūlasaññānantaraṃ ekaṃ vavatthānanti evaṃ uddiṭṭhassa catudhātuvavatthānassa bhāvanāniddeso anuppatto.

今在食厌想之后,来解释前所提示的「一差别」的四界差别的修习。

[DEFINING OF THE ELEMENTS: WORD DEFINITIONS]

Ñ(XI,27): Now comes the description of the development of the definition of the four elements, which was listed as the 'one defining' next to the perception of repulsiveness in nutriment (Ch. III, §105).



Tattha vavatthānanti sabhāvūpalakkhaṇavasena sanniṭṭhānaṃ,

(四界差别的语义)这里的「差别」是以辨别而确定之义。

Ñ: Herein, 'defining' (vavaṭṭhāna) is determining by characterizing individual essences.



catunnaṃ dhātūnaṃ vavatthānaṃ catudhātuvavatthānaṃ.

四界的差别为「四界差别」。

Ñ: [The compound] catudhātuvavaṭṭhāna ('four-element defining') is [resolvable into] catunnaṃ dhātūnaṃ vavaṭṭhānaṃ ('defining of the four elements').



Dhātumanasikāro,

界的作意,

Ñ: 'Attention given to elements',



dhātukammaṭṭhānaṃ,

界的业处

Ñ: 'the meditation subject consisting of elements'



catudhātuvavatthānanti atthato ekaṃ.

与四界差别(三者)是同一意义。

Ñ: and 'defining of the four elements' all mean the same thing.



Tayidaṃ dvidhā āgataṃ saṅkhepato ca vitthārato ca.

(四界差别的经典)来叙述这四界差别,经中有略与详二种:

Ñ: This is given in two ways: in brief and in detail.



Saṅkhepato mahāsatipaṭṭhāne āgataṃ.

略的如《大念处经》所述;

Ñ: It is given in brief in the Mahāsatipaṭṭhāna Sutta (D.ii,294),



Vitthārato mahāhatthipadūpame rāhulovāde dhātuvibhaṅge ca.

详的如《大象迹喻经》《罗睺罗教诫经》及《界分别经》所述。

Ñ: and in detail in the Mahāhatthipadopama Sutta (M.i,185), the Rāhulovāda Sutta (M.i,421) and the Dhātuvibhaṅga Sutta (M.iii,240).
