Visuddhimagga VIII-39

176. Khaṇaparittatoti paramatthato hi atiparitto sattānaṃ jīvitakkhaṇo ekacittappavattimattoyeva.

Ñ(VIII,39): 8. As to the shortness of the moment: in the ultimate sense the life-moment of living beings is extremely short, being only as much as the occurrence of a single conscious moment.

Yathā nāma rathacakkaṃ pavattamānampi ekeneva nemippadesena pavattati,

Ñ: Just as a chariot wheel, when it is rolling, rolls [that is, touches the ground] only on one point of [the circumference of] its tyre,

tiṭṭhamānampi ekeneva tiṭṭhati,

Ñ: and, when it is at rest, rests only on one point,

evameva ekacittakkhaṇikaṃ sattānaṃ jīvitaṃ.

Ñ: so too, the life of living beings lasts only for a single conscious moment.

Tasmiṃ citte niruddhamatte satto niruddhoti vuccati.

Ñ: When that consciousness has ceased, the being is said to have ceased,

Yathāha –

Ñ: according as it is said:

‘‘atīte cittakkhaṇe jīvittha,

Ñ: 'In a past conscious moment he did live,

na jīvati,

Ñ: not he does live,

na jīvissati.

Ñ: not he will live.

Anāgate cittakkhaṇe na jīvittha,

Ñ: In a future conscious moment not he did live,

na jīvati,

Ñ: not he does live,

jīvissati.

Ñ: he will live.

Paccuppanne cittakkhaṇe na jīvittha,

Ñ: In the present conscious moment not he did live,

jīvati,

Ñ: he does live,

na jīvissati.

Ñ: not he will live.

‘‘Jīvitaṃ attabhāvo ca, sukhadukkhā ca kevalā;

Ekacittasamāyuttā, lahu so vattate khaṇo.

Ñ: '"Life, person, pleasure, pain—just these alone

Join in one conscious moment that flicks by.

Notes in Chinese translation : 『

‘‘Ye niruddhā marantassa, tiṭṭhamānassa vā idha;

Sabbepi sadisā khandhā, gatā appaṭisandhikā.

Ñ: Ceased aggregates of those dead or alive

Are all alike, gone never to return.

‘‘Anibbattena na jāto, paccuppannena jīvati;

Cittabhaṅgā mato loko, paññatti paramatthiyā’’ti. (mahāni. 39);

Ñ: No [world is] born if [consciousness is] not

Produced; when that is present, then it lives;

When consciousness dissolves, the world is dead:

The highest sense this concept will allow" ' (Nd.1,42).

Evaṃ khaṇaparittato maraṇaṃ anussaritabbaṃ.

Ñ: This is how death should be recollected as to the shortness of the moment.
